The 17th UK Filk convention, 4th - 6th February 2005

The annual UK filk convention is heading for sunny climes and the south coast, this time to the Queens hotel in Southsea. Seeking to impress one and all with the illusion of organisation are Dawn and Brian Biddle, Miki Dennis, and Mike Richards.

The Queen's Hotel is a large Edwardian hotel in Southsea, Portsmouth. Being "in town" it is convenient for shops and local restaurants, and Portsmouth has good travel links by road, train, bus/coach and ferry. We will have the use of a reasonable amount of function space: 2 large and 1 small room, plus a reception area near the bar. Please contact the convention rather than trying to book with the hotel.

We are hoping to arrange a fixed-price buffet in the evenings. Room rates for bed and breakfast are £35 per person per night in twin/double rooms, with a limited number of single rooms at the same price. Children under 16 will only be charged for breakfast. There are some inexpensive B&Bs within half a mile.

The hotel has a web-site but please note that it has some errors: the booking system will only allow room bookings on the Sunday if the reservation starts earlier, and the site significantly underestimates the capacity of the rooms - the hotel flier puts the capacity about 50% higher. We are reasonably confident that there will be plenty of space.

Our guests of honour are Andy and Martin Gordon-Kerr and Terence Chua

Andy and Martin Gordon-Kerr have long been stalwart members of UK filk fandom, performing as a duo and in groups, running conventions, and providing tech services at many a UK filk convention.

Terence Chua was Singapore’s best-known filker before his move to the US. He is known for his wide selection of songs, particularly from the Cthulu mythos and ones bearing a passing resemblance to Abba tunes.

Membership to the convention currently costs £26 for adults and £13 for unwaged, with under 5s for £1. Supporting and day memberships are half this. Hotel accommodation will cost £35 per person per night bed and breakfast, though there will be a surcharge for single occupancy of double/twin rooms. Cheques should be made payable to Dixseption.
